Puzzled Parent - Oops! I did it again . . .

Posted by Puzzled Parent on January 15, 2012 at 12:55pm 0 Comments

Sometimes I do extremely stupid things.  I hate when that happens.  I foolishly started smoking in secret again a while ago, and got busted.  My husband is furious with me, and rightly so.  I am determined to stop.  NO MORE for me.  This has been so much harder than when I quit the first time.  Still, I have to quit.  It is expensive and icky and all those other things we know to be true of smoking.  So I am going to be stocking up on gum.  When I chew gum, I don't want to smoke . .…

Puzzled Parent - Let's Talk About . . .

Posted by Puzzled Parent on December 7, 2011 at 12:00pm 0 Comments

I have neglected my blog for long enough.  Working part time has seriously compressed the time I have for the stuff I have always done anyway and I am reworking my time management.  I am excited to share something I did way back in October.  Our pastor asked me to speak about autism during the Children's Message . . . I wasn't sure what I would say and prayed for guidance.  It came to me that we are blessed to have a young man with Asperger's Syndrome in our Church family also.  I called his…

Puzzled Parent - For my Sweetie! (: That means YOU, Honey ;)

Posted by Puzzled Parent on October 22, 2011 at 3:30pm 0 Comments

I need to say something here.  I could have said it on that totally bogus "Male Valentine's Day" that Hallmark invented called "Sweetest Day."  But I, like the rest of the world, paid absolutely no mind to Sweetest Day's approach and only remembered its existence when I saw the balloon arrangements at Meijer on the actual day . . . I think it was October 14.  Since that day, when I briefly considered getting my husband a balloon (before dismissing it when I imagined his annoyance that I had…

Puzzled Parent - Can't we all just . . .

Life is very confusing sometimes.  I have found that so many people seem to exist and go through life with what appears to be extremely flawed logic.  I just do not understand it.  I hear people saying this is a Christian nation, founded on Christian principles.  But, by and large, these people in the news and their fellow "Christians" seem to have missed one of those principles.  Remember "Love your neighbor as yourself"?  What happened to…

What is The CommonUnity?

The CommonUnity will be a place that facilitates growth in individuals, families and communities by providing on-site childcare, education and professional opportunities, space and services which promote healthy living and balance for all stages of life.

We believe that it is important to provide support, opportunity and enrichment to individuals so they may be empowered to live their dreams regardless of their current circumstance. As we facilitate growth within the individual it naturally ripples out, effecting their friends and families in inspiring ways, rippling further into the community and holding the potential to impact an entire city, state, country - or even the world.

Want to get involved?

We are looking for people who feel passionate about the potential within their community and want to help make this dream a reality. Whether you are a professional who could provide a service, someone who would like to contribute financially or just someone who wants to be involved in this movement, we need your help! Check out the CommonUnity Group page for more details on what we want to do and how YOU can help make it happen!

The "Milk For Thought" bus rolls through Grand Rapids on their "Latch On America" tour to empower and unite breastfeeding mothers!

The welcome line for the Latch On America Bus was made up of women, men and children who held big pink signs that read things like "Eat At Mom's","Breastfeeding Is Normal" & "Babies Were Born To Breastfeed!".

The Grand Rapids BIG LATCH ON

On Saturday 6th August at 10:30am in multiple locations and time zones across the globe, 4123* women and their children came together and breastfed simultaneously across 294* locations as part of the Big Latch On. (*provisional total)

The Grand Rapids BIG LATCH ON was a smashing success! We would like to give props to all of the wonderful mothers and those who showed their support for this event in any way. The idea that breastfeeding is natural, normal and healthy is something that The CommonUnity feels strongly in support of.

Breastfeeding is an issue that may be misunderstood by some, but, the bonds forged between the members of our community who do choose to do it are strong, unique and undeniable. Not only does breastfeeding seem to bond a mother and child in ways that bottle feeding could never come close (because the woman is actually having to share and care for her body)- it seems that the experience also bonds women to each other. Nursing mothers tend to reach out to one another and build bonds and relationships. It seems that regardless of social background, women who get together based on their experiences with breastfeeding cross all barriers and forge unlikely friendships and are capable of extraordinary things. The CommonUnity is always in support of the issues that empower and unite in a way that creates peace and understanding. We believe that breastfeeding could actually be one of the most peace promoting acts we can do in our lifetimes.

We feel that this is a community issue and that the mothers who choose to breastfeed their children should be celebrated and supported wherever they go. No mother should have to fight for her right to breastfeed her child.

Free 2 Feed GR is a direct result of the Latch On America tour bus and BIG LATCH ON events as well as the incident with Miss. Afrykahn Moon who was recently told to cover up or get off a bus while nursing her newborn baby. We thought it could do a lot of good to help businesses not only understand the importance of protecting a woman's right to feed her baby, but to help them establish themselves as Free 2 Feed GR sites.

This important database will be an important Grand Rapids resource for breastfeeding moms, especially new mothers who are just learning how to breastfeed in the first place. They need to know that there are places to go and feel safe to nurse her child if she needs to. We are hoping to help create that for these mothers.
